This article begins by noting that the world's five major IT companies, known as FAMGA (Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon), recorded a combined market capitalization of approximately $497 billion as of February 3, 2017, providing added value to customers by utilizing information technology (IT).
Conversely, the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry is known as a field with little to no speed in adopting new ideas or technologies. Recently, however, various cases have emerged exploring ways to utilize IT, specifically BIM (Building Information Modeling), and demonstrating the benefits of its adoption.
Syntegrate, introduced in this article, is a consulting firm specializing in the application of computer-based technologies, focusing on increasing project efficiency and project value. The text demonstrates the added value brought by IT (BIM) adoption in the AEC industry through four specific cases conducted by Syntegrate.
- Danjiang Bridge Project in Taiwan
A case of improving the collaboration process using cloud technology.
- Admiralty Station Project in Hong Kong
A case of significantly improving the accuracy of the underpinning method through BIM application. - Taiwan Resort Project
A case of dramatically reducing the time required for drawing generation tasks through automation. - Japan Exhibition Center Project
A case of applying BIM data to projection simulation for exhibition planning, utilized in the operational stage plan.
In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the AEC industry can significantly improve efficiency and productivity by actively adopting IT, particularly BIM.
